Valero Countryside Paddock

A range of activities and information for those who love the countryside

Valero Countryside Paddock

An exciting new collaboration, a new site and a refreshed vibe all make a visit to the Valero Countryside Paddock a 'must do' at the 2018 show.

Following a temporary move in 2017, the countryside area now moves to a bigger central location. The support of the Valero Pembroke Refinery team adds a greatly appreciated 'coming together' of organisations who value the natural environment.

Back by popular demand to lead the demonstration arena are the Wye Valley Axe Team. Precision and masterful woodland skills are on show in competitions for speed and accuracy, with amusing and informative commentary to add to the entertainment. Eirwyn and his team look forward to meeting you and they're a must-watch.

There's classic rural work on show from the BASC (https://basc.org.uk)  working gundogs, with regular masterclasses throughout the day from champion handler Meurig Rees and his trusty Labradors.

Spectacular aerial flying by Pembrokeshire Falconry  (https://www.pembrokeshire-falconry.co.uk) will make the most of the wide skies. Alex and Emma are sure to entertain and inform their audiences about each of their special birds. This is as close as you can get to beautiful birds of prey - whatever age you are, you can share this amazing experience.

New trade stands are joined by returning favourites.

Afonydd Cymru (http://afonyddcymru.org) will again be on hand to focus on the rivers and streams of Wales. Be sure to check out the vast array of underwater species which can be seen close up.

We welcome back The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales (https://www.welshwildlife.org) , with news and information on all things related to conservation of our wonderful Welsh wildlife. We also welcome the Pembrokeshire Bird Group, who join WTSWW to bring their specialist up to the minute news and knowledge.

Traditional woodland work will be showcased by Tir Coed, ably assisted by Coppicewood College. Shavings and wood chips are sure to fly.

If you need advice on canine matters, the Dogs Trust (https://www.dogstrust.org.uk) team will also be on hand to help.

We are all aware of the need to support pollinators (flying insects which fertilise a whole range of important plants), and there will 'bee' help and advice from an experienced beekeeper.

Be sure not to miss the fabulous Valero Countryside Paddock during your visit to this year's show!

Valero are long-term major sponsors of the Pembrokeshire County Show. Their selection of the Countryside Paddock for support gives real impetus to the ongoing development of the area. Pembrokehsire Agricultural Society are particularly grateful to Stephen Thornton, of Valero.

Messages from our partners this year:

Lloyd Evans, chairman West Wales Rivers Trust (under umbrella of Afonydd Cymru):

"The West Wales Rivers Trust (WWRT) is delighted to be participating in the 2018 Pembrokeshire County Show, an event we have supported for many years.

The Trust is an independent environmental charity established to secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of the rivers, streams, watercourses and water bodies in the counties of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion, and to advance the education of the public in the management of water and the wider environment.

Once again, we will have colourful displays highlighting the environmental work we are carrying out in the three counties as well as our usual river bug display. This activity is always popular with children (and adults) so come along and have look at what lives in your local river.

One of our current projects is a liming scheme, funded by one of our partners Dwr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW), on the Doethie tributary of the Tywi which has been badly affected by acidification made worse by conifer forestry. WWRT is also involved in training and deploying Farm Advisors in the three counties, also funded by DCWW. Details of this project will be on display, as well as a demonstration of how the pH and oxygen levels in our rivers are measured.

We are always looking for volunteers to get involved in our activities so if you want to know more, come along and chat to us. More and more, the health of our rivers, streams and watercourses is dependent on third sector organisations such as WWRT. Our rivers are being damaged by pollution and habitat degredation - we are committed to turning that situation around, especially post Brexit. See you there!"

Meurig Rees, BASC Regional for mid, south and west Wales and Training Officer.

The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) have supported the Pembrokeshire County Show and its Countryside area since 2005 and we are delighted and excited to be part of the new Valero Countryside Paddock.

BASC is a national representative body for sporting shooting with a membership of over 150,000 and growing.

'BASC Wales' aims to provide a public voice for shooting and conservation in Wales with cross party support in the Welsh Assembly Government. To campaign on the issues affecting shooting and conservation in Wales through balanced coverage in the Welsh media.  To defend the freedom of private firearms ownership, promote healthy quarry populations and habitats and encourage access to shooting in Wales. To raise standards and provide expert advice.

The show and countryside paddock bring the cities/towns and farming and the countryside together as one and showcase how farming, shooting and conservation go hand in hand. Our trade stand will be headed up by Meurig Rees, regional officer for Mid, South and West Wales. together with his knowledge we  will have plenty of free information for all on our stand for your shooting and conservation questions, we are also  supported by members of the Pembrokeshire Wildfowling Association and Gwenllan Country Crafts, not forgetting a chance to meet black Labradors Ceri, Holly and Ivy, all working gundogs up close and personal.

Meurig and his dogs will also form part of the ongoing displays that you will find going on in the paddock.

We look forwards to seeing you all in the new Countryside Paddock and a huge thank you to Valero for its support.
